The lead, or also called ballast, fixed to the kart seat has the function of influencing the distribution of the weight of the driver and the kart to optimize the attitude and performance on track.
In more detail, the use is for:
- Reaching the minimum weight required: in many categories of karting, there is a combined minimum weight for the driver and the kart. If the pilot is light, lead must be added to reach this limit. This ensures that all competitors have a similar weight, making the competition fairer.
- Balance the weight: the distribution of the weight has a significant influence on the behaviour of the kart in turns, braking and acceleration.
- Shifting weight backwards: can improve traction in acceleration, especially on low grip tracks.
- Shift the weight forward: it can improve braking and directivity in curve entry.
- Moving the weight laterally: it can help to balance the kart in a bend, influencing the lifting of the rear inner wheel (lifting). A proper lift can improve the speed in curves.
- Optimize the trim for different track conditions: track conditions (grip, temperature, layout) can vary greatly. The addition or removal of lead wires, and their different arrangement, allows you to adapt the setup of the kart to get the best performance in any situation.
The lead wires are usually fixed directly to the kart seat by means of special brackets and bolts. The precise position of the lead may vary depending on the rider’s needs and the characteristics of the chassis. Common areas include:
- Under the seat: to lower the centre of gravity.
- Laterally to the seat: to influence the lateral balance.
- Behind the seat: to shift the weight towards the rear.
ATTENTION: in the drop-down menu you can select the weight you want to buy.
